Healthy Eating
Glenlochar Kitchens prides itself on using dry beans, peas, lentils and grains, from our Canadian farmers, producing value added agri – food products of soup, casserole and chili mixes. We felt that it was important to highlight the natural attributes that these bean, pea, lentil and grain products contain and any recent study results featuring the health benefits they provide.
Following is a list of our products, with the natural health benefits and study results that we have found.
Dry Beans
According to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada website, dry peas are “an excellent source of non-fat protein and high in dietary fibre, containing both soluble and insoluble fibre”. They also contain “high levels of complex carbohydrates with low to moderate glycemic index”. Dry beans contain carbohydrates with a low glycemic index and “provide energy over a long period of time by being slowly released into the bloodstream to provide sustained energy levels”. Dry beans are gluten free and low in sodium.
Dry beans are known to possess appetite suppressant qualities slowing digestion and delaying the hunger from returning. Dry beans contain protein and can be used as a meat extender and /or as a meat substitute. “Dry beans are an excellent source of minerals such as iron, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc.
“Recent research for the USDA has shown that small red beans, red kidney beans and pinto beans are among the top foods that contain the highest level of antioxidants.”
